WHAT IS THE NEC 700.3?

As part of the 2017 National Electrical Code® (NEC®) from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the NFPA 700.3 provision outlines criteria for temporary power sources. The standard for the 700.3(F) applies to legally required emergency power systems.

In short, it stipulates that you must install a permanent means to connect to an alternate power source if your primary source is unavailable while undergoing maintenance or repairs. You should have a permanent switching option available at all times to connect to your temporary or portable power source. By meeting this requirement, you give your facility a fast and safe way to engage your temporary power source when your primary source goes offline for maintenance.

NEC 700.3(F) TERMS AND REQUIREMENTS

The NEC 700.3(F) terms specify that a temporary power source must meet these conditions:

  • Connecting to the temporary power source must not require permanent system wiring modifications.
  • Transferring power from the primary to the emergency source must take no more than 10 seconds (in compliance with NEC 700.12).
  • Electrical interlocking in the system must prevent accidental power source connection.
  • The switch between power sources should include a contact point, remote from the generator, to indicate that the emergency source is disconnected from the system. A manual switch is an approved means to transfer power draw to the temporary source.
